“I am beyond disappointed that he tested positive for marijuana. It is now in the hands of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.” – Dana White.
Dana White has officially confirmed that Carlos Condit has agreed to an immediate rematch with Nick Diaz following their fight at UFC 143.
The fight has been an extremely debated topic this week, splitting the MMA Community right down the middle. Half favoring Diaz’s aggression and control and penalizing Condit’s unwillingness to engage. The other half favors Condit’s elusiveness, excellent use of kicks and ability to keep Diaz from maintaining any dominance.
Although Condit’s performance was far from what you would expect from “The Natural Born Killer” he did earn a Unanimous Decision, however, all three judges disagreed on just which rounds he won, only adding fire to the debate.
The UFC has recently requested a date for Memorial Day Weekend in Las Vegas, as well as Independence Day weekend. Both of which always hosts big card for UFC. Condit vs. Diaz II could headline either card, giving the winner enough time to prepare for a showdown with Georges St. Pierre in November. Although Memorial Day Weekend may be more likely since neither fighter sustained substantial damage. However, it would not be surprising if Nick Diaz and Cesar Gracie request the fight take place outside of Vegas.
“I was very disappointed. Everyone knows he smokes marijuana medicinally in California. He has a legal right to do it in this state. He was surprised he tested positive. He does the same ritual every fight for the last five years. He stops it in time and he cleanses his system, works out like crazy, drinks a lot of water and purges his system of it.” -Cesar Gracie
[UPDATE] The NSAC has just revealed that Nick Diaz has FAILED his UFC 143 Pre-Fight Drug Test, testing positive for Marijuana. His consequences haven’t been revealed, but it will be a minimum 6 months suspension, possibly be more because this is his second offense. Lorenzo Fertitta expects Diaz to return the UFC once his suspension is served.
[UPDATE 2] It is now being reported that while Diaz did in fact test positive for Marijuana, the levels were only enough to generate a positive test and not past the threshold to warrant any form of punishment. Although the process isn’t completely over, it would appear as though Diaz will not be suspended or fined. This potentially means Diaz vs. Condit II may still be in the works.
[UPDATE 3] Diaz will have a hearing with NSAC in April where he can state his defense and will receive a ruling on the violation. At this time, Carlos Condit is opting to wait eight months for GSP to return, rather than defend his Interim-Welterweight Title. However, should Diaz not be penalized, or is able to return quickly, a fight with Condit over the summer may still be a possibility.
